Top 10 Things To Do in Ötztal

A to-do-list that makes you happy

Are you planning a summer holiday in Tirol and do you want to know what you definitely shouldn't miss in Ötztal? Then we have the top 10 things to do in Ötztal for your memorable summer:

1. Area 47: Outdoor & Leisure Time Park

This is where surfers' hearts beat faster, tumbling over obstacles or chilling out in a deckchair with fabulous mountain view. But the wakeboard lake is just the beginning of Area 47 because the adventure continues with a huge outdoor pool including highlights like blobbing air cushions, water slides, diving platforms and varied climbing facilities. You can also book guided canyoning & river rafting tours or visit the airy high rope climbing garden right under the motorway bridge. As we all know, life begins at the end of the comfort zone and quite many border crossings are possible at Area 47.

Feels like... a day in Peter Pan's Neverland dream.

2. Lake Piburger See: Cooling Off Highlight

Mirror, mirror on the wall, where is the fairest mountain lake in the whole country? There are actually countless mountain lakes spread over Ötztal but only one where the pleasant water temperatures invite you to take a long swim: scenic Lake Piburger See. Its water temperatures can reach up to 26 degrees Celsius in summer. Nestling at the heart of a nature preserve above Oetz, it also won fame on Instagram in recent years. The lake was created after the last Ice Age when a disastrous rockslide blocked the way of the water. The very idyllic location attracts photographers even after the last swimmers have left.

Photographer's tipp: Floating past white water lilies in a rowing boat.

3. Stuiben Falls: In the middle of the Waterfall

The Stuiben Falls near Umhausen are a completely natural air conditioning system. With a falling height of 159 meters, it is Tirol's biggest waterfall. The fine water spray promises refreshing moments on hot summer days and it has also been scientifically proven to have positive effects on your health. Either you hike along the waterfall by conquering a total of 728 steps via a platform system or you look for direct contact with the rocks on the via ferrata. What's more, this via ferrata is perfectly suitable for beginners and - thanks to additional steps and handles - also for children from the age of 10. The undisputed highlight: An airy suspension bridge across the waterfall.

Don't miss this: A visit to the Ötzi Village afterwards, nestling at the foot of the Stuiben Falls, makes your day really perfect!

4. Längenfeld: Nature Park House

Museums are known to be a good rainy weather program. Right. And on the other hand, it's not true at all: even if the weather is fine, the Nature Park House in Längenfeld - which opened in 2019 - is really worth a visit. The light wood and modern architecture make the interactive exhibition an exciting destination. The museum gives detailed insights and provides exciting facts about the unique flora and fauna of Ötztal. Stuffed animals were deliberately omitted while wood-carved items are exhibited.

Get ready for the outdoors: The certified Ötztal nature park guides have a keen eye for local animals and plants and are happy to pass on their knowledge to you on guided tours.

5. Aqua Dome: Wellness with Mountain View

Even in the past there was a hot spring with healing effects in Längenfeld at the heart of Ötztal, which was already known and used in the 16th century. Unfortunately, the spring dried up in the 1970s. No need to mourn, thanks to drilling it was reactivated again at a depth of almost 1900 meters! This is why the Aqua Dome thermal spa was built in 2004. In addition to the warm swimming pools, it also offers an excellent sauna parlor. Be it an Ötztal herbal aufguss in the Canyon Sauna or a salt peeling session at the steam bath - here you can breathe really well and wind down. A special eye-catcher: The three bowl-shaped pools in the open air, where you enjoy breathtaking views of the mountains.

Shhh, don't tell anyone: Even in fine weather you can perfectly relax at the Aqua Dome.

6. WIDIVERSUM in Hochoetz: Action at the Children's Playground

The journey is its own reward. Except at the Widiversum in Hochoetz, because here the ride on Acherkogel mountain gondola up to 2000 m is already a great highlight for many families! From the valley floor, you can reach the adventure park next to the top station in just 10 minutes. There are cool activities and exciting puzzles for children who help mountain sheep WIDI and his friends find the lost magic crystal. In the 5D Movie Shuttle young adventurers can also take part in the chase with all senses, hovering included! Nobody in the family will get bored here.

Insider tip: On three theme walking trails to the area's huts and Alpine pastures even those who aren't keen on hiking will get a taste of it.

7. James Bond in Sölden

"Well, it's all a question of perspective," said James Bond in Spectre, which was partly shot in Sölden in 2015. True 007 fans can look forward to a very special exhibition with original items from the Bond film at the top station of Gaislachkogl at 3040 m above sea level. The unrivaled "007 ELEMENTS" multimedia installation shows scenes from Spectre as well as highlights from the other 24 Bond films. Additionally, it is one of the few authorized Bond Exhibitions world-wide! A must-see for film enthusiasts and everyone who wants to change perspective.

Don't miss this: The adjacent ice Q restaurant was also part of a filming scene in Spectre and has been awarded two toques. So why not combine a bit of film history with a culinary flying high?

8. Aiming Higher: Summit Bucket List

Hardly any other three thousand meter high peak in Tirol can be climbed as easily as the summit cross of Gaislachkogl peak at 3058 m ... from the gondola's top station it can be reached in just a few minutes. Maybe a first taste of the next three thousand meter peak conquest in the future? Far more than 200 of them can be seen from here in good weather. Ötztal's local, certified mountain guides know them like the back of their hand and advise you on your choice - guiding you safely up to the mountain tops and back down into the valley. Holiday experiences that are truly unforgettable.

Feels like... surpassing oneself without risking anything stupid.

9. Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road: Cross-border Adventurers

The pictures are really impressive when the pass road has to be cleared from snow again by powerful snow blowers in late spring. The Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road leads over the 2509 m high pass from North Tirol to Passeiertal valley in South Tyrol. It is not uncommon to drive past meter-high snow walls even in the middle of July. A stop at the Top Mountain Motorcycle Museum and the architecturally excellent information stations is strongly recommended. (The Motorcycle Museum was completely destroyed by a major fire in January 2021. Therefore the private collection fell victim to the flames. The twin brothers Alban and Attila Scheiber are busy with the museum's reconstruction. The opening is planned for autumn 2021.)

Don't miss this: Experienced mountaineers can hike from Timmelsjoch Pass to Brunnenkogelhaus and then descend to Sölden. A fairly long, lonely and wonderful hike.

Heading southwards

10. Vent: From Mountaineers for Mountaineers

"The best comes at the end!" - this goes without saying for the 138 inhabitants of the small mountain and climbers village. If you need a little more distance from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, you and your hiking boots have come to the right place. Alpinists, climbers, leisurely hikers, mountaineers and art-loving walkers - Vent has something for everyone. Wait a minute, art-loving hikers? We are talking about all those who walk along the Art Trail to the picturesque Rofenhöfe farms deeply rooted in history. On their way hikers can admire several stone sculptures from the ARTeVENT International Sculptors Symposium.

Worth a look: Every year, exciting exhibitions take place in the Mountaineers Chapel in the center of the village.
