Autumn skiing on the glacier

This special feeling after a seemingly endless summer break, when you snap your ski boots into the bindings for the first time, push off hard and the snow crackles under your skis: it is always something unique. While autumn skiing in the Sölden glacier ski area, you can kick-off the season with top slope conditions from mid September onwards and try out the latest ski equipment right away.

Covering an area of more than 20 km², the Sölden glacier ski area is one of the largest in Tirol and all of Austria. At altitudes between 2675 and 3250 meters there is absolute snow guarantee on the white mountain flanks of Rettenbach and Tiefenbach Glaciers. Some 34.5 km of slopes await you on both sides of the connecting ski tunnel. Great advantage: There is surprisingly little hustle and bustle in the pre-winter months.

Sporty and athletic: international training teams improve their skiing technique and speed on the red and black slopes of Rettenbach Glacier. Additionally, even skilled hobby skiers enjoy the fairly steep and demanding World Cup slope and its demanding ski runs. This ultimate challenge should only be accepted by those who are really in an excellent shape. It is not for nothing that the giant slalom in Sölden is considered one of the most difficult of the entire FIS Alpine Ski World Cup.

Adjacent Tiefenbach Glacier boasts blue and red slopes and is quite relaxing. The much gentler, flatter terrain promises great fun for beginners and slightly advanced. You can mix hard and tender as you like: the connecting glacier ski run (6SK Seiterkar - SL Seiterjöchl) and Schwarze Schneid ski tunnel at 3240 m link both Rettenbach and Tiefenbach Glaciers and can be easily reached from both sides.

Spend your time where it really counts: on the slopes! 8 top modern mountain lifts take skiers and snowboarders quickly up to the glacier ski area runs. In theory, around 16.500 people/hour can be transported, and in practice, skiing fun in early autumn and fall is guaranteed to take place without waiting times. Most of the mountain lifts and gondolas start at the base stations of Rettenbach and Tiefenbach Glaciers, which can be easily reached by car or bus on the Eastern Alps’ highest panorama road.

Giant slalom poles waving in the wind: Sölden’s unrivaled glacier ski mountains are an extremely popular training area for national ski teams and clubs during the autumn months. Separate training slopes of varied difficulty levels can be reserved in advance.

The international skiing elite has been ringing in the racing season at Rettenbach Glacier since 1993. All the stars like Marcel Hirscher, Ted Ligety, Anna Fenninger, Mikaela Shiffrin & many more have already competed on the World Cup slope: the enthusiastic audience can watch most parts of the race course from the finish arena.

Steep, steeper, slope No. 31: with a maximum gradient of 65 percent, the Ski World Cup slope on Rettenbach Glacier is the steepest downhill stretch within the entire Sölden ski area. For comparison purposes: the downhill section at the start of the legendary Hahnenkamm race has “only” a gradient of 50 percent.
